State constitutional judge and "master of his profession"

Peter J. Tettinger was born in Cologne on March 01, 1947. He completed his law studies at University of Cologne in 1970, passing the first state examination in law. During his academic work with Klaus Stern from 1970 to 1979, he received his doctorate with a thesis titled "Ingerenzprobleme staatlicher Konjunktursteuerung auf kommunaler Ebene", followed by the second state examination in 1979.

In 1979 he received his habilitation with a thesis on the application of law and judicial control in economic administrative law. Subsequently, he held the Chair of Public Law with a focus on general administrative law, economic constitutional law and economic administrative law at the Ruhr University in Bochum. From 1988 to 1998, he was Director of the Institute for Mining and Energy Law at the University in Bochum.

In 1998, Tettinger moved to the University of Cologne and became Director of the Institute for Public and Administrative Law, taking over from his academic teacher, Klaus Stern. Since 1995, Tettinger has been a deputy member of the Constitutional Court for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, based in Münster; since 2000, a full member. From 2001 to 2003, Tettinger was also Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Cologne. In 2004, he became a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences (Class for the Humanities).

On September 23, 2005, Peter J. Tettinger passed away at the age of 58. In 2007, the Cologne-based Carl Heymanns Verlag published a memorial volume in his memory. The introduction by his academic teacher, Klaus Stern, is headed with the words: "Peter J. Tettinger - a master of his subject".
